As a beast from the East myself, it is really important to witness and document this history in the making. Internationally acclaimed are these local brands that hail from the streets of Kwa-Thema. (kwatsaduza). Having been across Africa, America and Europe – all in the name of art. I feel called to document these moments because these are unknown gods that might just fade away, simply because no one ever took the time to care to share. We have been to international spaces and have witnessed how art is valued and documented. We are aware that where we come from, art is not as valued and documented as it should. People don’t see the price of gold in our creatives’ worth. Maybe once you are famous and can give back to the community, then you get some respectable recognition. Until then, your reputation is tarnished like the worn out sneakers that you are most likely to be wearing and the scruffy hair that you most like to have. You are judged by your outer appearance and considered deranged for making this art. Where do you think the money to buy it will come from when people are battling to put bread on the table? Why don’t you just get a job? Oh don’t get started about telling your family that you want to study art. You will be a joke to the old man and you will give your old lady a fit. They want you to be a doctor, a lawyer, a scientist, an engineer. They do not see the healing that your art brings, they can’t see the doctor that you already are in the name of art. They do not see the advocacy that your art bears, they can’t see the advocate that you already are in the name of art.
The creators of existing realities are scientists and artists alike. One could miss the connection so just to connect the dots there for a moment… The creation begins from the knowledge, power and/or message within. That tiinnnnggg moment where the bulb goes on from inside of you. Then power is exerted to share this light with the world. Yes, prepare to be called crazy, but also GENIUS! Chances are it will start off with just you and maybe a few other “misfits” like yourself, perhaps that one cheering parent as well. Probably starting off with no money, struggling to be taken seriously. The soul is dancing between impatience and the calling bestowed upon you to bear this light’s forthcoming.
All you need is just a hand that can lift you up and assure you that you are not a misunderstood mistake. You are a creative genius that can express the God within self. Considered a misfit because you are one of the few that can hear the noise and still be able to silence it with your craft. Which craft? The one that makes you as good as our father who art… on canvas as it is in spirit.
